For most, the reality of working from home as an entrepreneur looks a lot different. Life as an entrepreneurs doesn’t always look as glamorous as some articles paint it. Hundreds of entrepreneurs are in the trenches working long hours to make this side hustle into a dream. If you’re an entrepreneur out there crushing it, we want to give you five practical tips for working from home. These simple tips have worked for us, and we hope they help you navigate the challenges of running a business from your home.

1. Create business hours

You may have left the corporate world on a promise that you wouldn’t have to abide by the 9-5 grind. Does the thought of creating business hours make you cringe? Bear with me, and I will try to convince you of the importance of adding structured work hours to your day. We’d argue creating business hours is important for two different parties: your clients & family. Your clients need to be taught when they can expect to hear from you. If you start responding to every question at 5 am or 10 pm, clients will learn that they can contact you at any hour and expect a response. Do you e-mail your dentist at 10:30 pm about a non-emergency and expect a response? I hope not. Don’t get caught up in always being available.

The second reason is family! Hopefully, your family is excited for you finally start this entrepreneur lifestyle. Now you are always available, right? It’s easy to get caught up in the flexibility of being an entrepreneur and forget to set boundaries so work can be accomplished.

2. Schedule your day/week

I am an Enneagram 3, remember? About Emily. I can’t help but plan and create schedules for my week. Whether you work from home or head into the office every Monday, you need to plan for success. We’ve laid out key factors to set yourself up for success.

Look at the whole week:

Find a night on the weekend, most common is Sunday, and lay out the whole week. Meetings, business dinners, kids sports games, husband’s works benefit dinner. Lay it all out and break it down day by day. After you have broken down the day by day, start to pick the top three items that no matter what happens, needs to get done.

Morning Routine:

We start out the morning with the 5 minute journal. It is a game changer!!! We encourage you to check it out. Learn More

Doing the same thing every morning. Sound boring? It’s not, because our routine has allowed us to mentally prepare for the day ahead. The principle of sticking to the same routine every creates efficiency in our life. The result is spending more time on what matters.

Prep, prep, prep:

Prep for us goes into two categories; food and clothing. We lay out workout clothes and meal prep. Sounds like a lot of work, right? Well, in the long run, it saves a lot of time and money. It will be worth it!!!

Give yourself grace:

We don’t have kids and somehow our schedules rarely turn out as beautiful as we have planned. Life happens and events get pushed around. Give yourself grace!!! Don’t let unexpected events make you give up on the whole week.

3. Designated workplace

The freedom of working from home means that when you’re sick, you can do the majority of your work from the luxury of your bed. One of the best parts of being an entrepreneur is having the flexibility to do work from anywhere with wifi. At the same time, it can be a blessing and a curse. We have found it valuable to have a set location for work. We have a second bedroom we have turned into a guest room/office. We can shut the door to make this a designated place to get work done.

4. Be flexible

This may sound like I am contradicting “create business hours”. However, part of the reason we became an entrepreneur is for the ability to create our own schedule. Enjoy that you can be flexible and create space for things that matter.

5. Get out of the house

Head to the coffee shop or a park! Get out of the house. I mean it, get out! Fresh air will change your mindset and allow you to reset.
